Words for things that didn't have words yet.
AI search created problems nobody had names for. At some point during late-night client audits, we started naming them — because you can't fix what you can't say. Three of those terms, defined properly, free to use with attribution.
Citation Gravitas
Rankings measured position. Gravitas measures gravity: when an AI assembles an answer about your industry, does your brand pull the sentence toward itself? Brands with high citation gravitas get named unprompted; brands without it get paraphrased anonymously — their facts used, their name dropped.
How to observe it: ask the same five buyer questions to three AI engines monthly. Log who gets named. That's your gravitas benchmark — no tool subscription required.
Ghost Query
The unsettling part of AI search is what you can't see. When a prospect asks ChatGPT "best water filtration company near Cypress TX" and the answer names two competitors, no analytics platform on earth shows you that loss. It's a ghost: real demand, invisible defeat.
How to observe it: build the question list your customers actually ask (your sales inbox already contains it), run them through the engines, and count the answers where you're absent. Each absence is one ghost query. The list is your repair queue.
Entity Friction
We know this one personally: SynapseIN shares a search neighbourhood with a much older, much larger company with a near-identical name. Every ambiguity — a listing that says one thing, a schema file that says another, a brand that's spelled three ways — adds friction. Machines don't push through friction; they cite the frictionless competitor instead.
How to observe it: search your brand name cold on Google and ask three AI engines "what is [brand]?" Every wrong, merged or hedged answer is friction made visible. The fix is consistency: one name, one schema identity, one story everywhere.
Use these words
They're free to use — in your reports, your pitches, your posts — with attribution to SynapseIN appreciated. Language is how a discipline matures; AI visibility is young enough that we're all still naming its parts.
