Google Assistant Retires September 4. What Replaces It Doesn't Find Your Business - It Judges It.

In one line: Google Assistant shuts down on mobile on September 4, 2026, with Gemini replacing it - the end of the "command era" of voice, and the start of an era where assistants don't find your business page, they interrogate it.

Google has announced that Google Assistant goes away on mobile devices on September 4, 2026, replaced by Gemini across phones, WearOS and Android Auto - as covered by Search Engine Roundtable. Most coverage treats this as a product sunset. For local businesses, it's something bigger: the quiet retirement of an entire model of how machines asked about you.

Command era vs. conversation era

Google Assistant belonged to the command era: "call the nearest plumber," "navigate to the dental clinic." It matched a command to a listing - your Google Business Profile, mostly - and executed. The bar was low: exist, have hours, have a phone number.

Gemini-class assistants work differently. They don't just retrieve your listing; they read, summarize and judge. Ask a conversation-era assistant "find me a good family dentist that handles anxious kids and takes Saturday appointments" and it composes an answer from whatever it can actually understand about the practices in your area - websites, reviews, structured data, the questions you've answered publicly.

In the command era, businesses competed on presence. In the conversation era, they compete on machine-legibility - and that's a different scoreboard.

What the new assistant can and cannot see

From our field research this year, the gap is stark. In the 78-site baseline we sealed for our Machine Time Capsule in August 2026: 17 sites had no H1 headline at all - to a machine, no declared topic. 14 had no meta description - nothing quotable. Only 2 published machine-readable FAQ answers. And 1 in 13 robots.txt-bearing small businesses actively blocks at least one major AI crawler - usually by accident.

Every one of those gaps was survivable in the command era. In the conversation era, each one is a reason the assistant recommends someone else - not out of preference, but because it literally cannot compose an answer from your site.

The September 4 checklist for local businesses

* One clear H1 per page: what you do, where, for whom - the sentence you'd want an assistant to repeat.

* Answer real questions on-page (visible text + honest FAQ schema): assistants quote answers, not slogans.

* Verify AI crawlers can reach you: robots.txt AND your CDN settings - the accidental-lockout layer.

* Keep your GBP and website telling the same story: conversation-era assistants cross-check, and contradictions read as unreliability.

* Test yourself the way the machine does: our free Through Machine Eyes shows exactly what an assistant can read on your site today.

The Assistant's retirement date is Google's. Whether your business is legible to what replaces it - that date is yours.
