Why Google Can't Read Your Website (And Your Competitor's It Can)
Why Google Can't Read Your Website (And Your Competitor's It Can)
Two cosmetic surgery centers. Both on Rodeo Drive. Both Johns Hopkins-trained surgeons.
One gets cited by Google's AI, ChatGPT, and Perplexity every time someone searches for "best rhinoplasty surgeon in Los Angeles."
The other is invisible.
Same city. Same specialty. Same caliber of surgeons. Completely different outcomes on Google.
The difference isn't talent. It isn't reputation. It isn't ad spend.
The difference is a few lines of code that most business owners have never heard of.
It's called schema markup. And it's the single most underused competitive advantage in search right now.
What Is Schema Markup? (The Simplest Explanation)
Imagine walking into a restaurant. No menu. No sign. No host. The chef is world-class, but there's no way to know what they serve, how much it costs, or whether they're open.
You'd walk out.
That's what your website looks like to Google and AI systems without schema markup.
Schema markup is a nutrition label for your website. It's structured data — code embedded in your site — that tells Google and AI systems exactly what your business does, where it is, what services you offer, who your doctors are, what your credentials are, what your procedures cost, and what questions you answer.
Without it, Google sees a website. It doesn't know if you're a dental clinic, a law firm, or a restaurant. It can't tell if you offer dental implants or just general dentistry. It can't verify that your surgeons are board-certified. It can't match your content to the specific questions your potential clients are asking.
With it, Google and AI systems can read your business like a book. They can extract answers. They can cite you in AI-generated summaries. They can match you to high-intent searches.
Citation studies repeatedly find cited pages carry structured data far more often than average pages. Pages with proper schema see 73% higher AI Overview selection rates. That's not a small difference. That's the difference between being cited and being invisible.
The Numbers That Prove This Works
I'm not a data guy. But these numbers are hard to ignore:
* Rotten Tomatoes added schema markup to their pages. Click-through rate improved by 25%. Not from better content. From better code.
* Rakuten Recipe implemented structured data. Traffic increased 2.7x. Session duration jumped 1.5x. Same recipes. Better structure.
* A dental clinic in Mumbai went from page 3 to position 1 in 90 days after adding LocalBusiness schema, FAQPage schema, and dedicated service pages. Not a bigger marketing budget. Just schema.
* Salt Creek Dental went from zero AI Overview appearances to 822 in twelve months after implementing comprehensive schema markup including LocalBusiness, Dentist, MedicalBusiness, and Service schema. When someone asks ChatGPT "best family dentist near me," they get named. Their competitors don't.
* The Independent Pharmacy placed FAQ sections on almost every landing page and implemented FAQPage schema site-wide. Result: 8,700 keyword rankings in the People Also Ask box in a single month. Over one million monthly visits. From FAQ schema alone.
* A personal injury law firm in Miami implemented Attorney schema, LocalBusiness schema, and FAQPage schema on every page. They captured People Also Ask placements for "What to do after a car accident in Florida?" and similar queries. Organic traffic grew significantly while their Google Ads spend stayed flat.
These aren't outliers. These are the results of making your website readable by machines.
The Schema Types Your Business Needs
Different businesses need different schema types. Here's what matters for each:
Medical Clinics and Cosmetic Surgery Centers
Schema Type | What It Does | Where It Goes
MedicalClinic | Tells Google you're a medical facility with a location, specialty, and services | Homepage
Physician | Names your doctors, their specialties, credentials, and affiliations | Every doctor profile page
MedicalProcedure | Defines each procedure you offer (rhinoplasty, dental implant, knee replacement) | Every service/procedure page
FAQPage | Provides structured answers to common questions about cost, recovery, and candidacy | Every service page
ImageObject | Tells Google what your images contain (before/after photos, procedure diagrams) | Every page with images
LocalBusiness | Your location, hours, phone, geo-coordinates | Contact page, location pages
Personal Injury Law Firms

Organization | Your firm's name, practice areas, and credentials | Homepage

The 5 Mistakes That Make Schema Useless
I see these mistakes in almost every audit I run:
1. Schema doesn't match visible content
If your Product schema says a procedure costs $5,000 but the page shows $8,000, Google catches the mismatch. Your rich results get suppressed. The schema must match exactly what's on the page.
2. Missing required properties
Product schema without offers. Physician schema without credentials. LocalBusiness schema without an address. Incomplete structured data suppresses rich result display entirely. It's not that you get partial credit. You get zero.
3. Generic schema without detail
A bare Organization schema with just your name and URL gives effectively zero AI citation advantage. The lift comes from completing optional properties: sameAs links to your social profiles, knowsAbout declarations for your expertise areas, employee listings with credentials.
4. FAQPage on non-FAQ content
Marketing copy disguised as questions. "Why are we the best dental clinic in Singapore?" — that's not a question a patient asks. The March 2026 Google update demoted this at scale. Real FAQPage schema answers real questions that real people type into Google.
5. Set-and-forget schema
Schema deployed once and never touched again. Stale dateModified. Deprecated types (Google deprecated Sitelinks Search Box in January 2026). No quarterly audit. Schema needs maintenance. It's not a one-time installation. It's a living part of your website infrastructure.
How to Know If Your Website Has Schema
You can check right now:
1. Open your website in a browser
2. Right-click → View Page Source
3. Search for "schema.org" or "application/ld+json"
4. If you find nothing, you have no schema markup. Your website is a beautiful building with no address.
Or use Google's Rich Results Test (search for it). Paste your URL. It'll tell you exactly what schema you have and what's missing.
Most businesses I audit have zero schema. Zero. The best surgeons, the best lawyers, the best contractors — invisible to AI because they never added a few lines of code.
The Code That Decides If You Exist
I grew up in Kolkata. Seven years near Tollygunge. The best phuchkawala on our street never had a signboard. People found him by word of mouth. By the crowd gathered around his stall at 6 PM.
That works on a Kolkata street. It doesn't work on Google.
Online, if your code doesn't announce what you do, you simply don't exist. Not to AI. Not to the people searching for exactly what you offer.
What I build for businesses:
* Schema markup — MedicalClinic, Physician, MedicalProcedure, DentalClinic, Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage, HowTo, Service, ImageObject. Every type your business needs, validated and maintained
* Technical SEO — Core Web Vitals, canonical tags, XML sitemaps, crawl budget, internal linking, breadcrumb navigation
* AEO — Answer-first content formatting, heading hierarchy, FAQPage implementation, multi-platform optimization
* GEO — City-level pages, hreflang for multilingual markets, location-specific targeting
* Google Business Profile — Multi-category setup, booking integration, Q&A pre-loading, NAP consistency
The code under your website is what decides whether AI systems can find you, understand you, and recommend you. Everything else is decoration.
Curious what Google's AI sees when it looks at your site? Drop me your URL. I'll run a full schema audit — show you exactly what's there, what's broken, and what I'd add. No sales call. No follow-up email. Just the report.
