Information Agents: Google's AI Is Scanning the Web 24/7 for Your Business
Right now, as you're reading this, Google's AI is scanning the web.
Not waiting for someone to search. Not responding to a query. Proactively scanning. Finding. Indexing. Updating.
These are Information Agents — AI systems that operate on behalf of users, continuously scanning the web for relevant information. They're not crawlers. They're not bots. They're intelligent agents that understand context, evaluate accuracy, and prioritize freshness.
And if your website doesn't have the data they're looking for, they'll move on to your competitor.
What Are Information Agents?
Announced at Google I/O 2026, Information Agents are AI systems that scan the web 24/7 on behalf of users. They're available to premium subscribers first, launching summer 2026.
Here's how they work:
1. A user expresses interest in a topic — through searches, emails, calendar events, or browsing history
2. Google's Information Agents continuously scan the web for new information related to that interest
3. When they find relevant, accurate, current information, they surface it to the user
4. The user doesn't need to search again. The information comes to them.
For businesses, this means: if your website has accurate, current, AI-readable data, Information Agents will find you and surface you to interested users. If your data is stale, inconsistent, or unstructured, the agents will skip you.
What Information Agents Look For
Accurate Data
Information Agents cross-reference your data with multiple sources. If your website says your clinic is open until 8 PM but your Google Business Profile says 6 PM, the agent detects the inconsistency. It reduces trust in your data. It might not surface your business.
Current Data
Information Agents prioritize freshness. If your website hasn't been updated in 6 months, the agent treats your data as potentially outdated. It moves on to a source that's been updated more recently.
Pages updated within 30 days get meaningfully more citations. Stale pages get deprioritized.
AI-Readable Data
Information Agents read structured data. Schema markup. FAQPage schema. Organization schema. Service schema. If your data is buried in unstructured HTML, the agents can't extract it efficiently.
The agents need to be able to understand:
* What your business does (Organization, MedicalClinic, LegalService schema)
* Where you are (LocalBusiness schema with accurate NAP)
* What services you offer (Service, MedicalProcedure, Product schema)
* What questions you answer (FAQPage schema)
* Who your people are (Physician, Person schema with credentials)
Consistent Data
Information Agents cross-reference your website data with your Google Business Profile, your directory listings, your reviews, and third-party mentions. If the data is consistent across sources, trust increases. If it's inconsistent, trust decreases.
How to Prepare
1. Audit your schema markup. Every page should have appropriate schema. Every schema should be complete and accurate.
2. Update your content regularly. Set a quarterly review schedule. Update dateModified in your schema when you change content.
3. Ensure consistency across all sources. Your website, GBP, directory listings, and reviews should all tell the same story.
4. Complete your Google Business Profile. Every field. Every category. Every service. Every Q&A. Information Agents pull heavily from GBP data.
5. Generate fresh reviews. Review recency matters more than volume. Five reviews in the last month is better than 50 reviews from two years ago.
Information Agents are the future of search discovery. They're proactive, not reactive. They find businesses that are accurate, current, and AI-readable. They skip businesses that are stale, inconsistent, and unstructured.
The businesses that Information Agents can easily read will be the ones surfaced to interested users. The ones that can't be read will be invisible — even to the agents that are actively looking for them.
Is your website readable by Information Agents? Send me your URL. I'll check your schema completeness, data freshness, cross-source consistency, and AI readability. No follow-up. No sequence. Just the readability report.
