Information Gain: The Originality Lens

By Manas Panda & the SynapseIN teamPublished: July 31, 2026
In one line: Information gain measures whether a page adds knowledge beyond existing results - original data, first-hand experience, new angles. Consensus-repeating content is structurally demoted; original honest substance is structurally rewarded.

Information gain: what it is — and what Google has not confirmed

Ten dental clinics in Singapore. Ten websites. Ten pages about "dental implant cost in Singapore."

Nine of them say the same thing: "Dental implant costs in Singapore range from $3,000 to $6,000 per implant. Factors that affect cost include the type of implant, the complexity of the procedure, and the experience of the dentist."

The tenth says: "Dental implant costs in Singapore range from $3,000 to $6,000 per implant. But here's what every other clinic won't tell you: the $3,000 quote usually doesn't include bone grafting, which 40% of implant patients need. Add $1,500-$3,000. It also doesn't include the abutment and crown, which add another $1,500-$2,500. Your actual cost at $3,000-per-implant clinics is $6,000-$8,500. Our all-inclusive pricing starts at $5,500 — because we include everything in one quote."

The March 2026 Core Update renewed industry attention to an old research concept: information gain. Google has published research on the idea, but it has never confirmed a public “information gain” score or how — or whether — it is weighted in ranking. We treat it as a useful lens, not a confirmed dial. They repeat what's already been said. The tenth page provides significant information gain. It adds original insight that doesn't exist in the other nine pages.

Guess which page Google's AI cites.

What Is Information Gain?

Information gain is a concept from Google research and SEO practice: the idea that a page should add genuinely new, non-redundant information for the reader.

It's Google's way of saying: "If this page didn't exist, would the internet be missing anything?"

If the answer is no — the page is redundant — the page gets lower visibility. If the answer is yes — the page provides information that doesn't exist elsewhere — the page gets higher visibility.

This is the most significant quality signal Google has introduced since E-E-A-T. And it directly affects which businesses appear in AI Overviews and AI-generated answers.

How Information Gain Works

Redundant Content Gets Penalized

If your page says the same thing as 100 other pages on the same topic, it provides zero information gain. Google's AI has no reason to cite it. The AI can get the same information from any of the other 99 pages.

Original Content Gets Rewarded

If your page provides information that doesn't exist elsewhere — unique insights, proprietary data, specific experience, original analysis — it provides high information gain. Google's AI will preferentially cite it because it adds value that no other source provides.

The Signal Is Relative

Information Gain is measured relative to existing content. A page that was the first to say "dental implant costs in Singapore range from $3,000 to $6,000" had high information gain when it was published. But once 99 other pages say the same thing, the information gain drops to zero.

This means your content needs to continuously provide new information that hasn't been said before. Not just accurate information. Original information.

How to Create High Information Gain Content

1. Share Specific Experience

Generic content is redundant. Experienced content is original.

"Recovery takes 2-4 weeks" — redundant. Every dental website says this.

"Day 3 is the hardest. The swelling peaks. Patients always call panicking. I tell them: sleep at 45 degrees, skip sodium for two weeks, and don't look in the mirror until day 7. By day 14, you'll look normal again." — original. Only a surgeon who has guided 4,000 patients through recovery can write this.

2. Provide Proprietary Data

Industry benchmarks, case studies with specific results, proprietary research. This data doesn't exist anywhere else. It provides maximum information gain.

"Our 2026 dental implant success rate data: 98.2% for single implants, 96.7% for All-on-4, 94.1% for full-mouth rehabilitation. Based on 3,847 procedures performed at our clinic between 2020 and 2025."

3. Answer the Questions Nobody Else Answers

Most businesses avoid the uncomfortable questions. "What if the implant fails?" "What does dental implant revision cost?" "What are the most common complications?"

These questions have high information gain because most websites don't answer them. The pages that do answer them provide original value.

4. Provide Local, Specific, Timely Data

"Dental implant cost in Singapore" — generic, redundant. "Dental implant cost in Singapore 2026: what changed after the new GST rate" — specific, timely, original.

The March 2026 Core Update Context

The March 2026 Core Update was one of the most volatile in years, and many established pages reportedly lost rankings overnight. We cite no single churn percentage here because no verifiable source publishes one. The new signals — Information Gain, GBP completeness, and others — reshuffled the SERP dramatically.

The pages that gained were the ones with high information gain, strong E-E-A-T signals, and comprehensive entity data. The pages that lost were the ones with redundant, generic content.

This wasn't a temporary fluctuation. It was a structural shift. The new signals are permanent. And they favor businesses that create original, experience-driven content.

Information Gain is the answer to the question every business owner should be asking: "If my website didn't exist, would the internet be missing anything?"

If the answer is no, you have a redundancy problem. And redundancy is the fastest way to become invisible to AI.
