The Quiet llms.txt Surprise: Small Businesses Are Adopting Faster Than the Giants
Ask the industry about llms.txt and you'll hear a big-site story: which major publishers adopted it, whether AI companies honor it, whether it's a standard or a wish. What almost nobody measures is the end of the market where nobody is watching: ordinary small businesses.
What we found when we looked
For our Accidental AI Lockout study (August 2026), we checked 335 reachable small-business websites - dentists, law firms, solar installers, real estate agencies, plumbers across 15 US cities - for a genuine llms.txt file. Not just a 200 response: we verified the content was actual markdown-style AI guidance, excluding 15 false positives where servers return HTML for any path (a real measurement trap - more on that below).
The result: 55 of 335 sites - 16.4% - publish a genuine llms.txt. Law firms led at roughly one in five. For a convention that barely existed two years ago, that is remarkable adoption in a segment with no SEO teams and no CTOs.
Why small businesses might be adopting faster
Three honest hypotheses - labeled as hypotheses:
* No committees. A solo practice's web developer reads about llms.txt, adds it in an afternoon. A Fortune 500 legal team debates it for two quarters.
* Higher stakes per answer. When ChatGPT recommends one dentist in your town, being machine-readable isn't a branding question - it's the phone ringing or not.
* Agency diffusion. Local web shops copy each new best practice across their whole client roster at once. One convinced developer equals fifty adopting businesses.
The measurement trap other studies should watch for
A methodological note we want on the record: over one in five of the 200-OK llms.txt responses we fetched were not real llms.txt files - they were HTML fallback pages served by hosts that answer every URL. Any adoption study that counts HTTP 200s without reading the content will overstate adoption. Ours read every file; we published the raw data so you can check any line.
