10 Questions to Ask Any Agency Before You Pay
The checklist that separates the real agencies from the expensive costumes. No pitch attached — just armour for serious buyers.
This page exists for one reason: serious buyers get taken because nobody hands them the list. Here it is. Print it. Take it into every sales call. A good agency will relax when they see it — because they pass all ten.
1. What exactly will you do in month one, two and three?
A real plan has a sequence. 'We optimise everything' is a hope, not a plan. Ask for the first 90 days, in writing.
2. Who will actually do the work — you, or a stranger I'll never meet?
Big agencies sell the senior person and deliver the junior. Ask who is on your account, by name.
3. How do you measure success — rankings, traffic, or revenue?
Rankings are vanity if they don't bring the right calls. An honest agency ties work to business outcomes.
4. Will you show me the raw data, unedited, every month?
If the report is always green, it's decorated. Raw data has bad months. Ask to see the unedited numbers.
5. What happens if it's not working after six months?
A good answer names the off-ramp and the course-correction. A bad one blames you, Google, or the algorithm.
6. What will you NOT do — what's off-limits?
Buying links, fake reviews, hiding from AI. An agency that has no 'no' list will do anything to keep billing.
7. Can I talk to a current client, not just read a testimonial?
Testimonials can be curated. A live client who picks up the phone is proof. Respect it if they say no — but ask.
8. Do you guarantee #1 rankings or specific AI citations?
If they say yes, leave. Nobody controls Google or ChatGPT. The honest answer is 'we make you the hardest to ignore.'
9. What do you publish about yourself that I can verify?
The agency that audits its own site, publishes its own numbers, and lets you check — is the one built to be checked.
10. Why should I choose you over the agency that's 40% cheaper?
The answer should be about depth, evidence and fit — not fear, discounts, or a clock that expires tonight.
